Anti-GMO Activist Recants

You seem to be in favour of ignorance. The thing you are trying to ignore is People want to know!
When it comes to food no lets be more general and apply this to products in general.
place of origin - people like to support their local economy or enjoy a product from a particular region for example champagne from france or a watch from Switzerland. You might prefer Texas beef to Argentinian or Brazillian Beef.

The Organic label i am fine with that, I don't tend to buy organic food it usually costs more but there are definitely people who do and organic food also tends to be less wasteful of food as sizing is a lot looser than with your standard supermarket sizes,

Potato's can be from marble sized to a good pound or two in weight. I personally have no issue with having a single potato to peel (its quicker and there is less peel).
There are vast numbers of vegetables which go to waste if they do not match the supermarkets size guidelines. If we are talking about yield and costs to produce shouldn't we also look at sizes and blemishes, such as cracked onion skins.

Eggs can be free-range, organic, barn raised or factory farmed. do you care? maybe not. With chicken diet makes a difference, corn fed chicken has a yellow tinge to the meat and there is more meat on the bone too.

GM is another choice people want to make the same as they can look at a pack of sausages and see the E numbers they are free to choose to buy or not to buy. My personally most disliked phrase on a pack of burgers "Mechanically reclaimed meat" I also look at fat content and sugar content oh and water content too and soya content too.

I would also like to know the company producing the products name, I will not buy Sony for example a bias fairly commonly shared on Slashdot. I also will not buy from Smithfield meat or Japanese Tuna. I'd rather buy Irish Beef instead of British and support my local farmers. Your biases may vary.

My dad is allergic to gluten, want to make him ill just give him food with flour in it. It's quite handy for him to have gluten free labels on food. People do want to know what they are buying and GM is one of the things people want to know about GM crops maybe cheaper to produce due to bigger yields and less reliance on chemical fertilizers so let the price reflect that. Same with irradiated food and uht milk.

If you want to encourage people to buy GM food then first you need to give people the choice, people need to be aware that there are people eating GM food with no ill effects and that GM foods are as tasty as the non GM version if not more so. You are not going to gain acceptance of GM foods by flat out refusing to say which products are GM and which are not. By hiding the GM status of a food product you invite suspicion, if your being too cagey people will be convinced there is something wrong with GM food.

GM food needs to be marketed as such or it will always have a stigma attached to it. But lets not ignore the real reason for not labelling GM as GM. Sales would tank and corporations would lose money and who pays for the Government, Corporate Industry. In another thread there were snarky comments about people who boycott Sony (do you think Sony cares) maybe they do, maybe not, but its clear that there is an industry terrified of the fall out over GM labelling.

It's OK to flip the bird at cops, court rules

By Becky Bratu, NBC News

A New York man arrested after he gave the finger to a police officer can sue police for malicious prosecution, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday, overturning a lower-court decision that deemed the officer's response reasonable.

In its decision, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that giving someone the finger is an "ancient gesture of insult" and "is not the basis for a reasonable suspicion of a traffic violation or impending criminal activity."

The incident took place in May 2006, court documents say, when John Swartz and his wife, Judy Mayton-Swartz, were driving through the upstate village of St. Johnsville, N.Y., to the home of Judy?s son.

Swartz was in the passenger seat when he noticed a local officer, Richard Insogna, in a police car using a radar device. Expressing his displeasure, Swartz reached "his right arm outside the passenger side window and extending his middle finger over the car?s roof," according to court documents.

The couple continued their drive, but upon reaching their destination and getting out of the car, they saw an approaching police car with its lights flashing.

Ordering them to get back into the vehicle, Insogna told the couple this was a traffic stop and requested their documents. Swartz told his wife not to show the officer anything, prompting Insogna to say, "Shut your mouth, your ass is in enough trouble." Then, after checking the woman's license and registration, Insogna called for backup, according to court documents. Three other officers soon appeared.

After being told he and his wife were free to go, Swartz tried to speak with Insogna, but the other officers stepped in front of him.

Swartz was arrested after he either muttered or shouted, depending on whose account one reads, that he felt "like an ass."
At the station, he was told he had been arrested for disorderly conduct, a charge that was later dismissed.

Swartz's lawyer, Elmer Robert Keach III, praised the court's decision, The Associated Press reported.

"It reaffirms that just because you insult a police officer [it] doesn't give that police officer the right to detain you or arrest you and take away your liberty," Keach told The AP, calling the decision an "important victory for civil rights."

A lower-court in Albany had previously tossed out the couple's claim because police insisted they had stopped the couple out of concern for the woman's safety.

In his deposition, Insogna said Swartz's gesture made him "concerned for the female driver, if there was a domestic dispute.?

But the appeals court deemed his conclusion unreasonable. "Indeed, such a gesture alone cannot establish probable cause to believe a disorderly conduct violation has occurred," court documents read.

The court added, however, that the merits of Swartz's lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, still must be litigated at a separate trial.

Sixtyandsingle.com: Retirement planning in a time of uncertainty

Women tell me all the time that they don't have enough saved for retirement and expect that they never will be able to retire. With that they turn to other topics...out of sight, out of mind.
It is never too late to save for retirement if you resolve to do it.
Retirement planning is really a combination of several elements - reducing your debt, cutting living expenses and chucking as much money as possible into tax-deferred savings programs such as a 401(k) or IRA or a tax-free Roth IRA. Don't count on any one else to do this.
This week I learned of a woman, age 70, who is splitting with her husband after 40-plus years of marriage. The separation is his idea. She's not worked out of the house for most of that time. If it comes to it... what will life on her own look like financially? She doesn't really know.
Ball park planning for retirement?(or being on your own)?is not a big deal. Give yourself an hour to get started. Go to Social Security and find out what your monthly benefit will be if you start drwaing?at age 66, 67 or 70. Look at your savings, where is it invested and how much it will produce in dividends and interest a year. That's money you can live on without tapping the principle.
Can you?work part-time? Will you inherit anything from an elderly parent?
Add all this up and you've got a pretty clear idea what your financial life in retirement or semi-retirement will look like.
Michelle Singletary,?among my favorite money columnists, writes in a recent colukmn?about how disconnected we are when it comes to long-range financial planning. Maybe it's because few of us think we earn enough money to worry about it.
"It's worth setting New Year's resolutions for your financial life," Singletary says. "If you are not happy about how you handle your money, make a change. It's also not enough to just focus on one area such as getting out of debt or starting the emergency fund. Your financial New Year's resolution should entail looking at getting your financial house in order," she said.
Singletary suggests that we should think about financial planning as we might think about getting a personal trainer. Find someone who is there to coach us and encourage us to stick with a routine of saving, managing and planning.?There are plenty of fee-based advisers eager to serve, if you don't think you can do it alone. Here at sixtyandsingle.com I shared 10 questions to ask when choosing a financial planner.
I've pretty much been a self-starter because I have a mother who trained me from age 5 to think about the long term. The $10 Christmas check from grandma went into my college savings fund. The money I received from selling my 4-H steers at market went into the same fund. I came out of college debt-free with a good understanding for the power of long-term planning and the rewards of investing. Thanks mom.
Now that we've avoided the fiscal cliff,?let's all get started with planning our financial futures.
"In periods of financial uncertainty a financial plan can be the basis of sound personal financial management," says Roger Wohlner writing at usnews.com. Now that we have a tax bill, we can look at income strategies, estate planning and rebalancing investments.
If you visualize the financial future that you want, you are much more likely to get there.

Internet Business Mastery 3 Tips for Speaking with Prospects as an ...

You are terrified. Why would people join your internet business if you have no experience? Sure, you can brag about other people?s results but what about yours? If you do not care about this question congratulate yourself: you are light years ahead of the home based opportunity crowd. If you do worry about this idea you need to do some inner clearing before you generate cash online.

Virtually all people have low self esteem entering the online business realm. Some feel fine about their prospects but after a few weeks of being rejected, or not seeing a single opt-in, most quit, or go into a funk. Their belief in self dissolves, replaced by doubts and overall anxiety about their ability to run a successful venture.

Internet Business Mastery

Tip 1 ? Tell the Truth

You will do yourself a favor by telling the truth. If somebody asks you how much money you have made with your mlm either tell them the amount or tell them you do not discuss results. You must remember, if people were to choose you based on your results, lying will only bite you in the ass, because karma is in effect.

In the same respect, if you do not share your results, because you never talk numbers, you will weed out non-believers, which is good because you only want people who buy into you, and your opportunity. So tell the truth and you will feel amazingly clear, and you can rest well at night, and you will keep your karma intact as a newbie entrepreneur.

Tip 2 ? Infect People with Your Energy

I mean, you can literally blind people with your energy and generate cash online without having any experience. As a rube newb I received more than a few cash gifting pledges because I bought into the concept and embodied this ideal wherever I popped up. You can do the same thing with your internet business if you are all in.

High vibe it. Infect people with your positive energy and most likely look past any lack of experience and are willing to buy in to the opp, and more importantly, you.

Tip 3 ? Embrace All Difficult Situations as Learning Experiences

I learned a few difficult lessons early on as a cash gifting mentor because I let my ego get in the way. I had low self-esteem and lacked clarity around cash gifting and naturally I felt terrible after having discussions with experienced online marketers. This crowd hit me up with all types of questions and I got flustered, then I got angry, and I resisted learning a valuable lesson, until waking up: you find the perfect matches at the perfect time.

One marketer did not want to do business with me unless I was making $20,000 a month. At the time, bad match for me, and to be honest, I do not know if this guy would ever be a match, because he put all his value on money, and nothing else.

Just roll with the punches, and embrace all uncomfortable situations as vehicles for your mlm advancement.

Are We Having Fun Yet?

I know it can be tough as a newb, which is why you need to select a helpful mentor and strong reason why you want to run an internet business. Ride out these rough patches, smile and keep your vision front and center.

New York Times Accidentally Admits That Energy Drinks Are Safer ...

Continuing his crusade against energy drinks on the front page of today's?New York Times,?business reporter Barry Meier notes?that the special ingredients in products like Red Bull, Monster Energy, and 5 Hour Energy don't seem to do much of anything. Based on "interviews with researchers and a review of scientific studies," he says, the energy delivered by these drinks comes mainly from the caffeine, as opposed to the taurine, B vitamins, or other scientific-sounding additives:

"If you had a cup of coffee you are going to affect metabolism in the same way," said Dr. Robert W. Pettitt, an associate professor at Minnesota State University in Mankato, who has studied the drinks.

Energy drink companies have promoted their products not as caffeine-fueled concoctions but as specially engineered blends that provide something more. For example, producers claim that "Red Bull gives you wings," that Rockstar Energy is "scientifically formulated" and Monster Energy is a "killer energy brew."...?

Promoting a message beyond caffeine has enabled the beverage makers to charge premium prices. A 16-ounce energy drink that sells for $2.99 a can contains about the same amount of caffeine as a tablet of NoDoz that costs 30 cents. Even Starbucks coffee is cheap by comparison; a 12-ounce cup that costs $1.85 has even more caffeine.

There is nothing wrong with pointing out that Red Bull does not really give you wings, or that the added value offered by energy drinks, as compared to other caffeine delivery devices, is speculative at best. But in the process of doing that, Meier contradicts the other, scarier prong of his attack on energy drinks, which is based on the claim that the caffeine they contain might kill you.

As Meier explains, "The drinks are now?under scrutiny?by the Food and Drug Administration after reports of deaths and serious injuries that may be linked to their high caffeine levels." He is referring to adverse event reports received by the Food and Drug Administration, which show only that someone experienced a symptom (or said they did) after consuming a product, not that the latter caused the former. Furthermore, the number of reports involving energy drinks is quite small compared to reports involving other widely consumed over-the-counter products. The "scrutiny" Meier mentions was prompted largely by his own alarmist coverage of the issue, which glossed over the fact that coffee contains more caffeine per ounce than energy drinks do.

But that was when Meier was trying to convince you that energy drinks are uniquely dangerous because they contain so much caffeine. Now that he is trying to show you what a waste of money these products are, he emphasizes that 12 ounces of Starbucks coffee delivers a bigger caffeine dose than 16 ounces of an energy drink. In other words, energy drinks are (as the No Doz slogan puts it) "safe as coffee." Safer, even. Will Meier remember that the next time he is trying to scare us about the deadly threat lurking inside those shiny cans??

PUYB Blog Tour: The Sexiest Drink on Earth by Mark Spivak ...

The Sexiest Drink on Earth

By Mark Spivak

How did a something that tastes like castor oil flavored with tree bark become the sexiest drink on earth?

Iconic SpiritsGaspare Campari invented his famous potion in 1860 by infusing sixty herbs, spices, barks and fruit peels in a mixture of alcohol and distilled water. It became a sensation, and Campari turned into an entrepreneur. There?s only one problem: Campari is bitter, and human beings have taste receptors for bitterness that function as an early warning system, alerting us that we are about to consume something that might be toxic or poisonous.

Imagine the dilemma for your brain as you take a sip of cold, refreshing Campari and soda. Part of your mind is saying, ?Don?t drink this?it might kill you!? In another sector of your cranium, though, the drink is perceived to be sophisticated and desirable. Given that more than 27 million bottles of Campari are sold each year, the brain has obviously found a way to disregard the potential dangers of bitterness. In researching my book, Iconic spirits: An Intoxicating History, I spoke to scientists doing research on the physiology of taste, and they all had a theory on how this conflict was resolved.

More importantly, though, how did Campari come to be regarded as the sexiest drink on earth?

The shimmering red potion may be infused with dozens of herbs and spices, but the advertising images have always contained a strong dose of forbidden fruit. In its marketing materials, the company describes Campari as a ?symbol of passion? and goes on to say that this passion ?expresses itself in terms of seduction, seduction and transgression??

The famous 1920 poster by Marcello Dudovich is a good example. Two lovers are locked in an embrace that can only be described as smoldering, balanced precariously on the edge of a sofa and enhanced by a background of soft crimson light. Two glasses, one half-filled with Campari, sit on a nearby table. The woman?s hand rests on the man?s cheek in a classic gesture, pushing him away and embracing him at the same time.

In 1998 Campari began working with the celebrated Indian director Tarsem, who created the series of ?Red Passion? ads. The campaign was the first in Italy to present female homosexuality in a straightforward yet compelling way; from there it went on to target other social norms. In a 2005 commercial, a man stands at the bar during a reception when he spots a tall, beautiful woman on the other side of the room. They exchange looks. The man obtains a Campari on the rocks from the bartender and follows the woman to a secludedpart of the building. His hand slips as he approaches her, and hesplashes Campari on her dress and cleavage. Slowly and tantalizingly, the woman removes her top and reveals herself to be a man. The man then takes off his shirt to display his bra and the fact that he?s actually a woman. The ad blends mystery and intrigue, explores repressed desires, and blurs the lines of gender identity?all in sixty seconds.

So relax and enjoy a cocktail made with Campari, whether it?s a Negroni, Americano, Garibaldi (Campari and orange juice) or a classic Campari and soda?but make sure that someone you care about is there to enjoy it with you.

Concern over Oscar voting extends deadline

(AP) ? Growing concern that problems with the new electronic Oscar voting system could lead to record-low turnout has prompted the motion picture academy to extend the deadline for members to vote for Oscar nominations.

But next week's highly anticipated announcements looming, the extension is only for a day, until Friday. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday any votes received after the new deadline will not be counted.

"By extending the voting deadline we are providing every opportunity available to make the transition to online balloting as smooth as possible," said the academy's chief operating officer, Ric Robertson, in a statement. "We're grateful to our global membership for joining us in this process."

Reports of difficulty accessing the Oscars' first-ever online voting system and fears that it could be hacked have raised questions about balloting for the 85th annual contest. Earlier this year, the academy and its longtime accountants, PricewaterhouseCoopers, partnered with the electronic voting firm Everyone Counts Inc. to develop the system.

"There's considerable concern from many members that voter participation will be at record lows this year because the people who wanted to take a chance on this new cutting-edge system are either giving up on it or worried they won't be able to cast their votes," said Scott Feinberg, awards analyst and blogger for The Hollywood Reporter.

In the past, Oscar voting has been compiled strictly through paper ballots sent through the mail. The new system allows members to choose between voting online or sticking with a traditional mail-in ballot.

Morgan Spurlock, the documentary filmmaker whose 2004 film "Super Size Me" was nominated for best documentary, posted on Twitter last week that he wasn't able to log on to vote electronically and his ballot was instead mailed to him.

"The password they sent didn't work for my log-in ? and they couldn't email me a new log-in, only snail mail," tweeted the 42-year-old director.

The academy said it has made several voting resources available to members, including assisted voting stations in Los Angeles, New York and London, and a 24-hour support line.

A spokesman for Everyone Counts didn't immediately respond to a request seeking comment.

Besides online voting, a retooled nomination period could also affect the competition.

Organizers moved up the unveiling of the Oscar nominations to Jan. 10. That change puts the announcement three days before Hollywood's second-biggest awards ceremony, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Golden Globes, which are scheduled for Jan. 13.

Oscar overseers originally said the switcheroo would give the academy's nearly 6,000 members more time to see nominated films before the Feb. 24 awards ceremony, but Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter noted that the change gave voters less time to see potential contenders during the first phase of voting, when members decide on nominees.

"If the turnout is lower among older members, more traditional Oscar contenders will probably receive fewer votes, and otherwise edgier films that appeal more to younger people could fare better," said Feinberg. "Because of the way that best-picture voting works, it could increase the chances of a movie like 'The Master' or 'Moonrise Kingdom' getting in."

Ultimately, because of the inherent secrecy involved in selecting Oscar winners, Feinberg said it will be impossible to know what affects ? if any ? this year's voting changes have on the ceremony, where as many as 10 films could be vying for the best-picture award.
